This pair of mallard weren’t misplaced at all, they were on a lake at Milton Country Park doing exactly what you’d expect mallard to do,
But this pair were very misplaced:
Romeo and Juliet
They appeared in my garden, relaxing under the crab apple tree, a couple of days ago, they disappear early in the morning and return in the afternoon. They’ve repeated this for the last three days now and they were here at dusk today sitting on the grass under the tree.
They seem completely unfazed by most interruptions including cats, humans and me flying past on my bike when I didn’t realise they were in situ. There is no water within half a mile so I don’t know why they are here, but it’s the first time we’ve had ducks in the garden and the children are very excited by their presence, so they’re welcome to stay as long as they want.

They weren’t misplaced. They simply knew where to go to find someone who would love them, maybe even taking their picture………. lol
That’s a nice thought, thanks Russel. They disappeared after 3 days so I hope they’ve now got a clutch of fledglings on the village pond.
Looks like you’ll have to get the paddling pool out early for the ducklings!
Yeah, problem is we’re in a droubt and we can’t fill it 😉

How very nice for you and your children…what excitement! Sounds like they’re looking to homestead…but what about when their little ones arrive? Will we see photos in a few weeks of a little line of babies following Mother Mallard down the street…water bound? 🙂

Could they be setting up a breeding territory nearby? It could be that the female is in the early stages of egg laying and then off feeding with her mate at other times. If so, check your local tree-holes as you may well have these two taking up residence nearby. These nest sites can be a long way from water sources. Should the female disappear for a few days then you may well end up with the ducklings coming to your garden in a few weeks time. It could of course be that the local foxes (sorry!) have devoured the young and they are debating whether to attempt another brood.

you are lucky with the wildlife around you, this reminds me of the two ducks that came to knock on Mormor’s door and if she did not respond they would go over to Sig and try their luck there, so it brings back lovely memories.X
Lovely memories indeed – I’m surprised I don’t remember that. But I do remember Prince the horse sticking his head in the kitchen window to scrounge some food and affection.

I think they feel safe. Every time I see a cat I rush out and launch crab apples after it to scare it off, so I reckon my neighbours must think I’m bonkers! They’re probably right 😉
